맛집 (matjib)
맛 (mat) means 'taste' or 'flavor'. 집 (jib) means 'house' or 'place'. Put together, 맛집 (matjib) means a delicious restaurant. 맛집 is a word so commonly used in Korean society today.
Well, it's been a long time since Koreans have been semi-obsessed with good food, both visual and taste-wise. And the word 맛집 has been used in such many useful ways. By itself, 맛집 means a delicious restaurant, as mentioned above. If you put a certain menu in front of the word, it'd mean that the very menu of that place is good. For example, 아메리카노 맛집 (americano matjib) would mean that 'this place serves good americano'.
However, the word 맛집 has taken up broader use where we use this to refer to businesses that serve different things than food, which I found REALLY interesting. I love when languages are fun. I still remember getting shocked when my friend used this word with 햇살 (sunlight) to say that the restaurant gets good sunlight, literally. People first started broadening its use by putting non-edible stuff in front of the word 맛집, from how I assume. And now, the word 맛집 is used for literally anything: e.g. 얘 리액션 맛집이야. This guy is a reaction matjib. (This guy has a variety of/plenty of reactions.)
One of the greatest contributors to this broadening of the use of new words is marketers. They are so fast to notice trends and do not hesitate to use them in advertisements. Youtubers also use these new words without hesitating to lead the trend and communicate more closely with their viewers.
The fast spread of new words and the variations are what I truly enjoy about my own language, although not every new word serves our society in a positive way. If you're learning Korean, I hope you get more exposure to this fun world of new words that fall somewhere between dictionary words and slang. It'll make your Korean learning way more interesting and ample.
